Macroeconomics

“The ideas of economists and political philosophers, both when they are right and when they are wrong, are more powerful than is commonly understood. Indeed the world is ruled by little else. Practical men, who believe themselves to be quite exempt from any intellectual influence, are usually the slaves of some defunct economist. ” – John Maynard Keynes

Recommended Textbooks

Introductory undergraduate
  1. Kahn Academy
    • The Kahn academy offers an incomplete range of free video lectures covering some of the fundamental concepts in macroeconomics. This includes the Keynesian Cross model which is commonly taught in macroeconomics 1 as a lead up to the AD-AS model.
  2. Principles of Macroeconomics by N. Gregory Mankiw
    • Just like the introduction to microeconomics, simply put, it’s also the best introduction to macroeconomics textbook that we have seen.
intermediate undergraduate
  1. Macroeconomics by Charles I. Jones
    • The most commonly used textbook at this level is Williamson’s Macroeconomics, however this textbook provides better explanations of key models e.g. The Solow-Swan growth model.
Advanced Undergraduate
  1. The ABCs of RBCs by George McCandless
    • McCandless book provides a nice introduction to RBC models and provides a chapter on OLG models. Whilst this could be viewed as slightly more advanced than most final year undergraduate textbooks it provides a glimpse into the types of material you will be working with if you decide to do postgraduate economics.
